This publication is part of the “Practices Notebook” — a collection of simple and safe spiritual exercises aimed at conscious inner cultivation.
Adapted excerpt from Discipleship in the New Age, by Alice A. Bailey.
While reading Discipleship in the New Age, I came across a brief but deeply practical passage. In it, Master Djwal Khul offers clear guidance on how to protect ourselves from harmful influences we may encounter on the spiritual path.
Below is an adapted transcription of the proposed exercise:
Exercise: Transmutation from the Sacral to the Throat Center
Objective: protect yourself from psychic influences and strengthen higher creative expression.
You need to learn to protect yourselves from people, in the psychic sense. The work must be done by yourselves, and it essentially involves the transmutation of the sacral center (not the solar plexus, as you might naturally assume) into the throat. Within the sacral center dwell the inherited racial fears and the most deeply rooted personal desires. Do not meditate on the sacral center, for that would draw these ancestral inheritances to the surface. Instead, let your work be focused on the creative throat center. Then perform the following exercise:
- Mentally intone the OM in the throat center, while holding the soul’s awareness in the ajna center.
- Visualize the throat center as a reservoir of radiant, vibrant, and brilliant light. Feel and affirm its energetic reality.
- From this center, project a wide and vital stream of energy through the spine down to the sacral center — keeping the flow intact in your awareness so that no part of it is diverted to the gonads (the physical counterpart of the sacral center).
- Now visualize the sacral center (along the spine) as another radiant reservoir of energy — no longer creative in the physical sense, but transmuted for the destruction of ancestral fears.
- Project this energy outward, into the world, with the intent of helping dissolve the inherited racial fears still present in humanity.
- Reaffirm your awareness in the ajna center, and gently withdraw your attention from the sacral and throat centers.
- Intone the OM seven times, slowly and silently.
Use this exercise as often as needed. You will be surprised at what it can do for you.
— Djwal Khul
Additional Notes
Although the original context refers to protection against the natural opposition faced by disciples aligned with service to humanity, this practice is also effective against common psychic attacks — whether intentional or accidental. At the very least, it reinforces the shift of vibrational focus from the sacral (seat of inherited fears and desires) to the throat center (instrument of creative expression and soul-aligned speech).
According to Djwal Khul’s instructions, it is recommended to practice it daily for at least six months in order to establish its beneficial effects in your energetic field and consciousness.
Let us begin. May this exercise become a tool in service of your inner alignment.
